A great thing with technology nowadays…when a consumer thinks a radical idea, they would most likely voice it out online. And since software developers are usually connected and in constant contact with their market thru forums, suggestion boxes, etc. It becomes easier for them to forsee what developments and progression to work on.

This brings us to the music world…specifically computer based production and DJ'ing. Ableton and Serato collaborated and brought us "The Bridge". The Bridge is a software that connects Ableton Live and Scratch Live or ITCH to work together. The idea is simple, its like using ReWire on DAW's. You can bridge both softwares either way giving you different functions on how to manipulate your set.

How does it work? (from ableton.com)

You can Cross the Bridge in either direction:

Ableton to Serato: Ableton Transport Control

The Bridge provides Ableton Transport Control (ATC), giving you turntable-style control of your own multitrack productions. Simply drag an Ableton Live Set to a deck in Scratch Live or ITCH and use your turntables, CDJ or ITCH controller to control the transport. With ATC, Scratch Live or ITCH provides your productions with deck control, mixing, nudging and DJ style looping, while you can remix, mute/solo tracks, use virtual instruments, change drum patterns, manipulate audio, tweak effects and launch loops on the fly in Ableton Live.

I say: Basically, the idea here is you incorporate the way you use midi controllers (yes you can still use midi controllers side by side with your DJ equipments!) and your DJ gear to manipulate everything in your Live set.

Serato to Ableton: Mixtape

lay your mix rather than cut and paste in a DAW. Forget about having to start a mixtape from scratch because of a mistake at minute fifty-nine. The Bridge is the ultimate mixtape creation tool, letting you export your Scratch Live or ITCH mix as an Ableton Live set. Depending on your Serato hardware setup, fader movements, EQ tweaks and Crossfader cuts on your DJ mixer are recorded as automation and can be edited after the tape stops rolling.

Before you start your DJ set, choose save as '.als' from the recording menu within Scratch Live or ITCH. Instead of recording an audio file, you'll get a fully automated Ableton Live arrangement, complete with song placement and automation data.

I say: Come on, who doesnt want to record their DJ sets MULTI-TRACKED!? with AUTOMATION?! 'nuff said :)

To sum it all up, this is a very promising product. It would help greatly if you are not only familiar but quite good and knowledgable with the ins and outs of both software to unleash its full potential. The Bridge was first seen at the NAMM Show 2010.
